Books-by-Mail

Books-by-Mail is a fast, convenient service to send library materials to people who are unable to access the library collection due to a temporary or long-term physical or visual disability. Available materials are large-print books, audiobooks (CD and Cassette) and descriptive video recordings (VHS and DVD). The rich collections of the Sarasota County Library System are as close as your mailbox, through Books-by-Mail.

Who may receive this service?

Any Sarasota County resident who cannot visit one of the libraries due to a physical or visual disability may apply for the service. To apply, contact the Books-by-Mail office at 941-861-2503. Books-by-Mail office hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Download the Books-by-Mail brochure here (PDF, 2pp.).

How does this service work?

The Books-by-Mail service sends materials through the mail in zippered bags to registered users. When the materials are due for return, the borrower removes the address label from the pocket on the bag. The label is then re-inserted to show the library address and sealed with a plastic tie, which is provided. Borrowers may also return the materials and mailbags to any Sarasota County public library.

Specific title or topics may be requested by the borrower, or selections may be made by the Books-by-Mail staff and volunteers. Formats which are eligible for the service are large-print books, audiobooks and descriptive video recordings. Borrowers may request library materials by phone or in writing. Those already using the service may place a written request in the mail bag along with the returned library materials.

Library users who have access to a computer may also make requests by reserving items through SUNCAT, the Sarasota County Libraries Catalog. (Choose "Bookmobile" as the desired pickup location when placing an online request.)

How can I help the library to provide this important service?
